ETERNITY Network Wide Event II, at Lisbon (Portugal), 2022

The 2nd Network Wide Event (NWE) of ETERNITY took place from 26th September until the 29th of September in Lisbon, Portugal. We had the opportunity to present our research to the others ESRs and supervisors, learn more about biosignals, and enjoy this time to meet each other again.

Monday, 26th of September

The NWE officially kicked off on Monday with a warm welcome by the project coordinator, followed up by the ESRs presentations. Each of us had the opportunity to share our research achievements, find possible collaboration between the others ESRs, and discuss with the experts in the consortium.

Later that day, prof. Mireya Fernández (UPC) gave an insightful presentation on “Bioelectric signals”. She explained how these signals are generated in the body, how to acquire them depending on their type, and some of the EMC problems that can arise when dealing with biosignals processing.

The day ended with a visit to NOVA School of Science and Technology, where researchers from different departments shared their work with us. In addition, we enjoyed the stunning views of the city from “Santuário de Cristo Rei”.

On the second day, prof. Hugo Plácido da Silva gave an inspiring talk on “Entrepreneurship in Biosignals” and shared his experience with BITalino, an open-source biosignals platform designed to create prototypes and applications using physiological sensors. This talk was followed by the first Immersive Training session, which was a continuation of the brainstorming we started during the first NWE in Bruges.

In that session in Bruges, we were divided into groups and were assigned one of the three societal challenges of ETERNITY: From care to prevention, quality of care and safe travel. In the second part of the training in Lisbon, we refined our previous ideas, identified possible market opportunities, and proposed new solutions taking into account the lessons we learned about entrepreneurship from prof. Hugo Silva.

The day concluded with a wonderful boat trip on Tagus river.

Wednesday, 28th of September 2022

The day started with a talk on “Machine Learning applied to Biosignals” by prof. Hugo Gamboa. During this talk, the presenter gave an overview of the machine learning algorithms most frequently used for biosignals applications and processing. Furthermore, we learned which are the aspects to take into account when fitting these models and how to avoid common mistakes.

Finally, he gave some real case examples of machine learning applications in the Biomedical domain. The rest of the day was dedicated to the Immersive training and hands-on experience with BITalino.

Thursday, 29th of September 2022

On the last day, the different groups formed by the ESRs presented our ideas or products that would solve the previously identified problem related to one of the societal challenges. In addition, Anne Roc’h and Hugo Silva gave us helpful feedback on how to improve them and the next steps in the process.

The NWE II was a fantastic opportunity to meet each other, get to know their projects, and have some fun in the beautiful city of Lisbon!

We are looking forward to the next ETERNITY NWE in Barcelona (Spain)!
